A Small Exotic Bird Show:
O.C. Hooymeijer
April 5 – June 27, 2014: O.C. Hooymeijer
O.C. Hooymeijer (Vlaardingen, 1958) finished his studies at the Academy of Visual Art in Rotterdam in 1981. From that moment on, he had may successful exhibitions, both in The Netherlands as abroad. His remarkable series of paintings and drawings, such as “Red Light District”, “Indian Portraits” and “Contemporary 17th Century Portraits” brought Hooymeijer national acclaim. His work “O.C. Hooymeijer’s Panorama of Amsterdam” was exhibited in 2002 in the Amsterdam Museum as part of the exhibition “Love for Sale”. Between 2009 and 2012 he created the impressive and touching series “Abuse”, “Catholic Abuse” and “Worship”.
So far man was the focus of his work. Now, with the new projects “The Great Exotic Bird Show” and “The non-existing birds of Europe”, man has been replaced by the bird. His most recent work features once more his theme wise approach, his expressionistic style and his not-to-be-missed picture frames. He even takes us one step further. The use of scent and sound turn his exhibitions more and more into a “total experience”.
Starting the 5th of April, Café Bern exhibits O.C. Hooymeijer’s “A Small Exotic Bird Show”. In this illustrious dinner café at the Nieuwmarkt, where Hooymeijer in his younger days prepared many-a-steak, a small selection of the hundreds of new birds can be admired.

Helmut Winzeler, a retrospective in photographs
We as well had to get used to it: Café Bern at the temporary location at Nieuwe Hoogstraat. All the more reason for a retrospective in some 50 photographs of the life of Helmut Winzeler (1928-2001), the man who started Cafe Bern in 1978 and made it into what it still is today.
All photographs are from private collections. Unlike normal exhibitions in Café Bern, none of these photographs are for sale.
Fondue without concessions
When Café Bern opened its doors for the first time in 1978, Helmut Winzeler was aged 50, after a life as nuclear physicist.
When young, he lived in Bern. No doubt this beautiful old town left a lasting impression on young Helmut, who was fascinated by nuclear physics, the study of elementary particles. Bern is not just the capital of Switzerland but also the place where Albert Einstein completed his theory of relativity.
For many years Helmut worked at Cern, the research centre with the famous particle accelerator, near Geneva. He lectured at universities in various parts of the world.
His last job as a nuclear physicist was at the Zeeman laboratory, part of the University of Amsterdam. Then he felt it had been enough and he set off for a whole new life.
Helmut didn’t have to do it all by himself: his partner Alexandra and his nephew Tom were at his side at the start of Bern and Koen joined them, shortly after. But Café Bern was his idea, an idea –typically Helmut– elaborated to the smallest detail, including recipes that had been developed in an almost scientific way. It’s these recipes, that are being respected and meticulously followed until the present day.
Helmut was so much more than just a nuclear physicist with a passion for cooking. He was a man who exactly knew what he wanted, without concessions and at the same time a very amiable person to those close and dear to him. He had a head for science and a heart for the arts, with many artists and architects amongst his best friends. He fully enjoyed life, an cosmopolite who felt at home in Amsterdam, an accomplished monocyclist, a man who brought people together and someone who has left a lasting impression in the collective memory of Café Bern.

Willem van Lochem (1958) has gained himself some reputation for his original landscapes on strips of plywood, mounted by sets of four. He calls himself a ‘horizontalist’. Until early January 2016 a nice selection of his works is exhibited, Title of the exposition is ‘Wheel of time’.

Everything within reach: Dinne van der Vlis
Dinne van der Vlis paints from movement and intuiton, according to the method ‘The Timesless Hour’, developped by Dutch artist and painter Michiel Czn Dhont..
Michiel: “The work radiates movement and color and an earthy character. It fills space with pure life energy.”
She takes pictures of details of her work, resulting in new images when printed. Originally her profession is film making. Besides that and besides the paintings and the prints, photography and poetry are her latest ways of expressing herself.
To her, art is a journey through the endless universe in which she exists and also through the endless universe inside herself.
In 2014 she got rid of most of her material belongings and left her houseboat, to be able to move more freely. There is lots of new space and she feels excited about, and curious for the things that are about to happen now….

The legendary festivities on Amsterdam’s Nieuwmarkt, during one week at the end of Aprll (in Dutch: ‘Aprilfeesten’), are a tradition that has been carried on for already 29 years. Or is it 30 years? Nobody knows for sure.
During the first years, posters were being printed to announce the ‘Aprilfeesten’. But 1996 was the first year of the intriguing ‘Aprilfeest paper bags’. They have been around ever since and have become true collector’s items. Every year Flip Jansen creates a new linocut

Mohamed Brahimi’s world
In his early years, he had already planned with his little brother Rabah to take over the laundry of his mother and to make a workshop out of it. They gave it the name LEBUITA which means the little corner in arabic.
After having attended many different schools in Algiers, they were gradually pushed by their ambition to leave Algeria to go and settle down in Europe. The idea is naturally to increase their knowledge. His little brother Rabah was the first one to make the move and to go to Paris. After graduating the academic school of art in Algiers. Shortly after that, Mohamed on his turn made his move and went to Andalucia, Spain for a short period of time. After that he decided to follow his brother’s itinerary and headed to Paris.
Not long after that Mohamed had another itinerary this time England was the next country. It was in London where he has attended different studies such as fashion and industrial design.
In 1985 he met his Dutch girlfriend and a year later he decided once more to extend borders and to depart to Holland. His dream came true in 1997, when he opened his own workshop with the help of his girlfriend: workshop LEBUITA was born. Since then Brahimi has been living and working in Maasbommel (Land van West Maas & Waal) in the Dutch countryside.
In the year 2001 came his first assignment. The department of justice Den bosch had a new act of law called Plukze wet and to promote the idea, they wanted him to design and to make a national trophy. With luck he succeeded to create and make the sculpture that got the name De kale kip, which means the bare chicken in the dutch language.
Brahimi is a versatile artist. From watercolour, oil & acrylic paint, to collage, sculpture and even writing. The materials used are diverse from paper, wood, fabric, plaster and lead.
His latest creation is recycling the used paint tubes to create those amazing miniture sculptures. Aware of the daily life and those real facts, he gave those tubes a second life and added in the same time a soul to them. With full motions. the tiny details in his work reflects an achievement of real fine arts. For each sculpture, a poetical text is added to finally leave a strong message behind in the minds of the viewer whom hopefully appreciates and accepts the result earned by his work.

Over the years, Ka Createur (1965) has developed her artistic skills in various fields. Her projects feature all kinds of design. Currently her focus is on abstract painting. It allows her to free herself from her pursuit of perfection.

Ka Createur
Ka createur heeft zich door de jaren heen op verschillende vakgebieden ontwikkeld. Haar projecten lopen qua vormgeving nogal uiteen. Momenteel ligt haar focus op het schilderen van abstracte werken. Hierbij kan zij zich losweken van haar perfectionisme.
Ka verwoordt deze abstractie als volgt: “Als ik mezelf niet in de weg zit en eruit kan laten komen wat er op dát moment in me leeft, dan is een goed schilderij in één sessie klaar. Deze zogenaamde oer-werken ontstaan vanuit van alles: frustratie, liefde, angst, onmacht en vreugde, er moet in ieder geval onrust van binnen aanwezig zijn.
De beste creaties ontstaan als het denken en alle oordelen stop gezet kunnen worden. Als ik mezelf verwonder over de compositie en in het doek terug kan lezen wat mij bezig hield, dan krijgt het schilderij bestaansrecht. Soms vraagt een schilderij om wat meer gelaagdheid en ook een ander beoordelingsvermogen, dan kan het proces maanden duren. Maar of je nu lang of kort bezig bent met een schilderij, een creatie raakt je of raakt je niet. Zo simpel is het dan ook weer”.

Anneke Hietbrink
Paint your colourful you!
Anneke Hietbrink has been drawing
-initially working with oil pastel on paper- since she was 20 years old. People and animals were her subjects, in colours that appealed to her taste. Later on she changed to gouache and has been painting for several years, her approach becoming increasingly intuitive: in colours and movement she expressed her inner feelings, inspired by natural shapes.
Since about a year ago, she has made a switch to acrylic on canvas. Anneke takes her pleasure and focus from the imagination and the choice of colours, that serve as a great source of energy.
Her life with colour, paint, with (increasingly larger) canvasses and imagination continues to be a source of opportunities, energy and joy.
Anneke aims to offer people a soft force, light-heartedness and an impulse to follow their instincts and vitalize their life.

Yes, Pjotr van Agtmaal, a.k.a. DJ Pjotr from Hell, showing his pictures at Café Bern. Wild at Heart is the perfect title for this exhibition. An interpretion of his universe, rocked onto the canvas, packed with energy. Rhythm, structure, dark-light, expression-imagination, whatever you would like to see. Interactive, what you see is what you see, he is merely giving you directions, work it out for yourself. One might describe his work as abstract ‘expressionisme moderne‘, but what’s in a name?
